How We Help

Our services

Once a case is reported to us and our remit is established, our staff and volunteers assess your needs to provide the best support.

The IRU has a conciliatory and advisory approach. Although we primarily seek legal redress for Islamophobia where appropriate, we also aim to improve awareness of Islam and sensitivity towards Muslims by working with other organisations.

Our volunteer caseworkers and legal supervisors give their time for free. You can become a volunteer here: Get Involved.

Who we help

We support those who have experienced or are experiencing Islamophobia including anti-Muslim hate crimes, hate-related incidents and or discrimination. You have to be a UK resident to be eligible for our support.

Examples of the types of cases we might assist include:

Discrimination at work or school

Race- and religion-based bullying
Refusals or restrictions related to the prayer
Bans or exclusions linked to Islamic clothing

Hate crime and hate incidents

Physical assault and verbal abuse
Harassment
Criminal damage
We cannot provide formal legal representation, but we offer a conciliatory and advisory approach depending on your circumstances. We can help determine any legal recourse you may have, and guide you towards the best course of action.

Sometimes we receive reports from clients who have already entered litigation proceedings; unfortunately, we do not assist in such proceedings. We do, however, try our best to guide you based on our own experience – for example, we may be able to review court applications, attend court hearings for emotional support, explain legal processes where possible, or signpost you to partner organisations.

All information given here is for guidance only. The IRU does not provide an advocacy service or legal representation.

We will not share any information without your prior consent. All your data is protected by the UK GDPR.
